Different between sugar and starches and how it affect your blood glucose level

 


 

    For years, many of us thought that body absorbed sugar more quickly than starch, and diabetic were told to avoid sugar and sweets food.  Sugar and starches are both carbohydrates and if eaten in the equal amounts, the raise blood sugar the same way.  Research has shown that sugar is okay for diabetic, if it is part of a balance diabetic meal plan and substitute for other carbohydrate food.  Focus on total amount of carbohydrate you eat rather than on whether it come from sugar or starches.

 

    Certain factors can affect the way your blood glucose responds to sugar and starches.  When you eat sweets, observed whether other food are eaten at the same time, how quickly you eat, how the food was prepared, and amount of protein and fat in the food.  Measure your blood glucose 1-2 hours after eating and note the affect sugar has on it.  Use this information to make decision about including sweets in your meal plan.
