Different between sugar and starches and how it affect your blood glucose level


Sugar alcohol is also known as polyols.  Sugar alcohol contain 2-3 calorie per gram, compare to 4 calories in normal sugar.  It is used to sweeten different types of foods, such as candy, chewing gums, baked goods, ice cream and fruits spreads.  Sugar alcohol are also found in toothpaste, ice cream and fruit spreads.

The sugar alcohol you will find in food labels include:

  • Hydrogenated starch

  • Hydrolysate

  • Isomalt

  • Lactitol

  • Mannitol

  • Malitol

  • Sorbitol

  • Xylitol

    Sugar alcohols are absorbed more slowly than others sugars and cause a smaller rise in blood glucose levels after they are eaten.  Because sugar alcohol are not completely digest in your stomach you may experience some side effects such as diarrhea, intestinal cramping, or gas if you eat too much of them.  General recommendation is to eat no more than 20-50 grams of sugar alcohol in a day, which is the amount found in 12-33 pieces of sugar alcohol sweetened hard candy.
